COSMETIC HERBS AND OILS FOR SKIN CARE AND AROMATHERAPY

Alkanet (Alkanna tinctoria) INCI Name: ALKANNA TINCTORIA (ALKANET) ROOT – Used by French ladies to color their faces with an ointment, Alkanet is used in wine making and wood waxing.  Known to help bruises, falls and wounds.

Almond Oil (Prunus amygdalus) INCI Name: PRUNUS DULCIS (ALMOND) & PRUNUS AMYGDALUS DULCIS (SWEET ALMOND) – Rich in protein, minerals and vitamins, high in oleic and linoleic and other fatty acids, with a sweet, pleasant fragrance.   Used in the treatment of very dry, chapped skin, relieves itching, soreness, and inflammation.  Used as a base oil for Aromatherapy blends.  Almonds contain amygdaline, which serves as the basis of laetrile, a controversial anticancer drug.

Organic Aloe (vera, barbedensis) INCI Name: ALOE BARBADENSIS (ALOE VERA) GEL – Used medicinally for over 3,000 years.  A rich emollient known to promote healing for damaged and burned skin.  Used to counteract wrinkles and regulate female hormones.  May be used as a carrying agent for essential oils.  Aloe Vera gel penetrates through all layers of tissue thanks to the lignin in the plant.  It works as a local anesthetic to relieve pain both on the surface and deep into the surface.  Aloe Vera contains an abundant amount of vitamins, amino acids and minerals.  The beneficial actions are a result of synergism involving the many constituents.

Althea (Althaea officinalis) – Organically grown in our Montana garden.  Used for inflammation in lung and throat preparations, softening and healing to the skin.  The gel we make from it is similar to Aloe gel.

Apricot Kernel Oil (Prunus armeniaca) – High in oleic and linoleic acids, contains vitamins and minerals used for prematurely aged, sensitive, inflamed and dry skin.  Used as a base oil for Aromatherapy blends.

Arabic Gum (Acacia) INCI Name: ACACIA SENEGAL GUM – Used as a demulcent to soothe irritations, particularly of the mucous membranes.  Used as a foam stabilizer in the soft drink and brewing industries.  May cause allergic reactions.

Arnica (Arnica Montana) – Organically grown and extracted by Kettle Care – For use on unbroken skin only.  Applied to sprains, bruises and wounds.  Great for tender feet. Also used as a deodorant.

Arrowroot (Maranta arundinaceae) – So named because the plant is said to be an antidote to arrow poison.  Helps dry up pimples, sores and wounds.  Has a silky texture.

Avocado Oil (Persea gratissima) INCI Name: PERSEA GRATISSIMA (AVOCADO) FRUIT OIL – Very high in oleic fatty acid and sterolins.  Contains vitamins A D & C and is penetrating, easily absorbed by the skin.  Known to accelerate healing, recommended for chronic eczema as a restorative.

Basil (Ocimum basilicum) INCI Name: OCIMUM BASILICUM (BASIL) ESSENTIAL OIL – Used as a hair dressing to perfume the hair, as a tonic to help hair grow and reduce tangles and snarls. Avoid during pregnancy.

Bay (Laurus nobilis) – Used for fragrance, sprains, colds, flu, insomnia and rheumatism. Avoid during pregnancy.

Bearberry (Arctostaphylos uva ursi) INCI Name: ARCTOSTAPHYLOS UVA-URSI – there is research showing that this extract has antibacterial and antioxidant properties (Sources: Food Microbiology, April 2003, pages 211–216; and Pharmaceutical Biology, June–July 2004, pages 289–291), and there is a small amount of research showing it can have skin-lightening properties (Source: International Journal of Dermatology, February 2003, pages 153–156). Bearberry extract’s potential efficacy is derived from its active components: hydroquinone and arbutin (Sources: Phytochemical Analysis, September–October 2001, pages 336–339.  Hydroquinone is well established as a melanin-inhibiting agent

Beeswax (Apis mellifera) INCI Name: BEESWAX – Kettle Care processed.  Protects skin from dryness, sun and wind.  Antibacterial

Benzoin Gum (Styrax benzoin) INCI Name: BENZOIN GUM – A balsamic resin from trees native to Siam, Sumatra and Java.  Antiseptic in irritable conditions of the skin.  An antioxidant with preservative properties.  In Aromatherapy, comforts anxiety conditions, helps with psychic exhaustion.  No known toxicity.

Bergamot (Citrus aurantium bergamia) INCI Name: CITRUS AURANTIUM BERGAMIA (BERGAMOT) FRUIT EXTRACT – Bergaptene Free. Antiseptic, astringent, deodorizing and healing.  Used for acne, cold sores, eczema, insect repellent, oily complexions, psoriasis and varicose veins and herpes.  Used extensively by the perfume industry, with a rich, sweet-fruity initial odor, it is uplifting, used as an antidepressant for peace and restful sleep.

Beta-Carotene – Converted to vitamin A in the liver.  Occurs in carrots, spinach and other green leafy vegetables.  Six parts of carotene is equivalent to one part of retinol.  Receiving great attention as an inhibitor of a variety of cancers in humans, including skin cancer.

Birch (Betula verrucosa) – Astringent, anti-rheumatic. Avoid during pregnancy.

Bitter Almond Essential Oil (Prunus amygdalus) – Free from prussic acid (FFPA) – Used only for external medication.  Used as almond essence, it is an anaesthetic, antispasmodic.

Black Cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa) – Relieves menopausal symptoms, menstrual cramps with back pain, morning sickness and pain.  Good for arthritis.  Should not be used in pregnancy until just before birth.

Sea Buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) – Kettle Care preparation - A natural sunscreen and astringent.

Butcher’s Broom (Ruscus aculeatus) – Kettle Care preparation - In combination with Horse Chestnut, helps veins by encouraging blood to move up out of the legs, decreasing inflammation and tightening weak veins. 

Cajeput (Melaleuca cajeputi) INCI Name: CAJEPUT ESSENTIAL OIL – A member of the Tea Tree family, grown and held in high regard in the East.  Reduces inflammations, good for sore muscles and rheumatic pains, antispasmodic.  Good for oily skin and spots, insect bites. Produces a sensation of warmth.

Calendula (Calendula officinalis) INCI Name: CALENDULA OFFICINALIS (POT MARIGOLD) FLOWER – Organically grown and extracted by Kettle Care - Anti-inflammatory, promotes healing of skin tissue, has been reported as effective in treating skin cancer.  Often recommended for babies, eczema and varicose veins.

Catnip (Nepeta cataria) – Causes perspiration, useful in colds.  Good for restlessness, used as a relaxant for children.  Relieves headaches and hysteria.

Chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile ROMAN) INCI Name: ANTHEMIS NOBILIS (CHAMOMILE) – Among the few essential oils that do not irritate the skin but have counter-irritant, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and pain relieving properties.  Used for sensitive or allergy prone skin.  Also used for soothing nerves, migraine headaches, insomnia and acne.

Camphor (Cinnamomum camphora) – Long standing, traditional preventative of infectious disease.  Antiseptic

Canola (Brassica napus) – Good fatty acid profile, high in monounsaturated fat, exceeding that of olive oil.

Capsicum (Capsicum frutescens) – Circulatory stimulant, promotes sweating, antiseptic, antibacterial, stimulating nerve tonic.  A counter-irritant that increases blood flow to an area.

Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum) INCI Name: ELETTARIA CARDAMOMUM (CARDAMOM) ESSENTIAL OIL – Used for its sweet, aromatic scent.  Good for mental fatigue, nervous strain.  Antiseptic, an aphrodisiac.

Carrot Seed Oil (Daucus carota) INCI Name: DAUCUS CAROTA SATIVA (CARROT) SEED ESSENTIAL OIL – Highly nutritious, rich in beta carotene, containing substantial amounts of vitamins A, C, B1 and B2.  Used for eczema, psoriasis, rashes, revitalizing and toning, mature complexions and wrinkles.  Promotes the formation of new cells and stimulates the production of sebum in dry, scaly scalps and skin.

Cedarwood, Virginian (Juniperus virginiana) INCI Name: CEDARWOOD ESSENTIAL OIL – Used as an insect repellent.  Mild, sweet and woody aroma.  Antiseptic, used for acne, dandruff, eczema, oily skin and psoriasis.  Harmonizing and calming.  Avoid during pregnancy.

Cellulose Gums INCI Name: CELLULOSE GUM– Chief constituent of the fiber of plants.  Used as an emulsifier.

Chaste Tree Berry (Vitex agnus-castus) INCI Name: VITEX TRIFOLIA (CHASTE TREE) FRUIT EXTRACT – Kettle Care preparation - Acts on the pituitary gland to stimulate and normalize hormonal function.  Appears to have more progesteronic than estrogenic action and makes a fine remedy for PMS.  Has a calming and relaxing effect, so can be used for emotional distress, such as occurs in PMS and menopause.

Cherry (Prunus) INCI Name: PRUNUS AVIUM (SWEET CHERRY) FRUIT EXTRACT – Contains the following nutritious ingredients: Melatonin: this potent antioxidant also serves in improving the body’s natural sleep patterns and circadian rhythms. And can aid in soothing sore muscles.  Beta Carotene: Excellent for shortening the lifespan of a cold or minor flu. Also aids in preventing more occurrences of colds. Antioxidant also works in conjunction with pituitary gland and hormone production.  Vitamin A: when beta carotene enters the body it is stored to be broken down into vitamin A.  Flavonoids: Known as melatonin and phenol compounds which help support cardiovascular health. Cherries contain three flavonoids, anthocyanidins, proanthocyanidins and anthocyanins, which gives fruits, plants and vegetables their color.  SOD Compounds: Very few foods contain SOD (super oxide dismutase). These unique properties serve the body as scavengers in their search and destroy method of eradicating the free radical enemy throughout the body.

Cinnamon (Cinnamomum cassia) INCI Name: CINNAMOMUM CASSIA (CINNAMON) ESSENTIAL OIL – Strong, spicy-warm, resinous aroma.  An aphrodisiac, to be used as an aromatic. Avoid during pregnancy.

Citronella (Cymbopogon nardus) – Used as an insect repellent, for headaches, fatigue, migraine.   Fresh, powerful lemon scent.  Avoid during pregnancy.

Citric Acid INCI Name: CITRIC ACID – A natural antioxidant that not only stimulates collagen production but neutralizes the skin damaging activities of free radicals. Often used for its astringent and skin lightening properties. Antioxidant and healing properties reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and minimizes the appearance of scars.

Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea) INCI Name: SALVIA SCLAREA (CLARY SAGE) ESSENTIAL OIL – Contains substances said to have an estrogen-like effect.  Deodorizing, has a vitalizing effect on scalp and dandruff control; peels off dead skin.   Used for depression, nerves, aches and pains and as a sedative.  A fixative for perfumes. Avoid during pregnancy.

Clay – Finely sifted clay is used to absorb toxins from the skin, clean and tighten pores.

Clove Bud (Syzygium aromaticum) INCI Name: EUGENIA CARYOPHYLLUS (CLOVE) ESSENTIAL OIL – Analgesic, antiseptic, this oil is known to reduce the pain of arthritis and rheumatism.  Good for acne, athlete’s foot and as an insect repellent. Avoid during pregnancy.

Cocoa butter (Theobroma cacao) INCI Name: THEOBROMA CACAO (CACAO) SEED BUTTER – Softens and melts at room temperature, softens and lubricates the skin.  May cause allergic reactions, usually known to consumer.  Softens pregnant skin and helps to erase stretch marks, aids in the treatment of skin irritations, softens and erases wrinkles on neck, around eyes and corners of the mouth.  Contains about 5 IU of vitamin E per ounce; well absorbed by the skin.  Can promote acne.

Coconut Oil (Cocos nucifera) INCI Name: COCOS NUCIFERA (COCONUT) OIL – White, semisolid, highly saturated fat expressed from the kernels of the coconut.  Widely used in the manufacture of baby soaps, shampoos, lotions, massage creams.  Lathers readily, a fine cleanser. 

Coconut oil betaine (Cocos nucifera) INCI Name: COCO-BETAINE – A combination of coconut oil and betaines, that occur in many vegetables.  Used as emulsifiers, thickeners, skin and hair conditioners.  No know toxicity.   In scientific language, (cocamidopropyl betaine) definition is zwrittenion (inner salt) fatty acids derived from coconut oil.  

Coconut oil hydroxyl (Cocos nucifera) INCI Name: COCOS NUCIFERA (COCONUT) OIL – Hydroxylated is the process in which an atom of hydrogen and an atom of oxygen are introduced into a compound to make the compound more soluble, so the oils will mix better with water.

Coconut oil olefin (Cocos nucifera) INCI Name: COCOS NUCIFERA (COCONUT) OIL OLEFIN – A natural lathering agent derived from coconut oil with no known allergic reactions or toxic buildup.     Prepared by reacting oils with sulfuric acid.  Used in soapless shampoos and hairsprays as an emulsifier and wetting ingredient.  Shampoos and hairsprays were first manufactured in 1880 and are effective in hard and soft water.  Sulfonated oils strip color from natural and colored hair and can bring out streaks.  Used in hair tonics that remain on the hair as hairdressings

Comfrey (Symphytum officinale) INCI Name: SYMPHYTUM OFFICINALE (COMFREY) – Kettle Care organically grown and prepared - A cell proliferant that regenerates aging tissues with continued use.  The source of allantoin, widely used in natural cosmetics.  Do not take internally.

Costmary (Tanacetum balsamita) – widely used as a spice and preservative in Europe, and has astringent and antiseptic properties.  Its lovely vanilla like scent makes it a lovely addition to potpourris and bath herbs.

Cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon) INCI Name: VACCINIUM MACROCARPON  – Is a powerful antioxidant and superb skin conditioner.  Cranberry assists in moisture retention and contributes to lipid barrier protection of the skin. It is also high in vitamin A and phospholipids.

Cucumber (Cucumis sativa) INCI Name: CUCUMIS SATIVUS (CUCUMBER) FRUIT EXTRACT – Cooling, healing and soothing to irritated skin, a beautifying agent for the skin.  Applied to the skin after exposure to wind and sun is extremely beneficial.

Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens) INCI Name: CALLITRIS INTRATROPICA (BLUE CYPRESS) ESSENTIAL OIL & CUPRESSUS SEMPERVIRENS (ITALIAN CYPRESS) OIL – Highly valued as a medicine and incense by ancient civilizations.  Now used for menopausal problems, excessive perspiration, nervous tension and varicose veins.  An insect repellent.

Distilled Water INCI Name: WATER – Water that has been purified. Impurities are removed to prevent contamination. Used as a solvent and a spreading agent, it helps to distribute ingredients evenly over the skin.

Elderflower, Organic (Sambucus canadensis) INCI Name: SAMBUCUS NIGRA (ELDER) FLOWER & SAMBUCUS CANADENSIS (AMERICAN ELDER) EXTRACT – Organically grown and extracted by Kettle Care – Healing and gentle astringent.  Used to cleanse skin and clear the complexion of freckles, ease sunburn.  Eases irritable skin and nerves.

Echinacea, Organic (Echinacea purpurea & angustifolia) INCI Name: ECHINACEA PURPUREA (PURPLE CONEFLOWER) – Kettle Care organically grown and prepared - Its immune enhancing properties are well documented.  It has an antibiotic and antiviral action, and has been shown to have antitumor activity (WH).  It is being tested with HIV and AIDs therapy.

Ester C INCI Name: ESTER-C - a form of vitamin C ascorbate. Ester-C ascorbate is a vitamin C complex containing essential C metabolites.  Unlike ordinary vitamin C, Ester-C is produced through an exclusive water based manufacturing process, providing anon acidic form of vitamin C that is gentle on your skin.  EsterC also has added bioflavonoids which play a role in maintaining good health.

Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) - Antiseptic and antibacterial, this fragrant oil is used in cleansers, massages formulations and bath oils to reduce inflammations and kill germs.  It has a soothing effect on the skin and scalp, is used in respiratory diseases, and is antispasmodic.  Estrogen like ingredients, promotes formation of new cells.

Evening Primrose Oil (Enothera biennis) INCI Name: OENOTHERA BIENNIS (EVENING PRIMROSE) OIL – High in essential fatty acids, shown to ease a wide span of health problems, including acne, arthritis, eczema, PMS, obesity.  High in Gamma-Linolenic Acid (GLA), necessary for the synthesis of prostaglandin, important for the skin.  Helps to prevent premature aging of the skin.

Eyebright, Wildcrafted (Euphrasia officinalis) – Natural astringent and antibacterial agents in Eyebright are known to be effective in tightening the porous oily skin and healing acne and irritated skin. 

False Unicorn (Chamaelirium luteum) – Kettle Care preparation - An excellent ovarian and uterine tonic.  Has a balancing effect on sex hormones, helping to relieve many disorders of the reproductive tract, menstrual irregularities and premenstrual syndrome.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) INCI Name: FOENICULUM VULGARE (SWEET FENNEL) ESSENTIAL OIL – Contains ingredients that are anti-inflammatory and have a tightening effect on the skin.  Used to strengthen muscle tone and increase the elasticity of connecting tissues.  Contains some estrogen like substances. Avoid during pregnancy.

Flax Seed (Linum usitatissimum) INCI Name: LINUM USITATISSIMUM (FLAX) SEED – Good for ulceration and inflammation, allays irritation and pain.  Used for removing spots from the face.   The oil is rich in essential fatty acids.

Frankincense (Buswellia thurifera) INCI Name: BOSWELLIA SACRA (FRANKINCENSE) ESSENTIAL OIL – Used for sores, wounds, tension, stress and nervous conditions.  Helps blemishes, dry and mature complexions, scars, wounds and wrinkles.  Used in ancient Egypt in rejuvenating face masks, cosmetics and perfumes. 

Galbanum (Ferula glabaniflua) – Used for swelling, inflammations, tension and nervous conditions.  Good for acne, heals scar tissue, tones the skin, for mature skin and wrinkles.  An ancient oil used for embalming.

Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens) INCI Name: PELARGONIUM CAPITATUM (GERANIUM) ESSENTIAL OIL – Highly recommended for oily skin because it equalizes sebum production.  Strengthens the connective tissues of the skin.  Used to treat acne, eczema, inflammations, cellulitis, herpes, fungal problems and certain cancers.  Good for depression and nervous tension.

Golden Seal (Hydrastis canadensis) – Kettle Care extracted - Possesses powerful antibacterial and antiviral properties, so is good for infections.  Useful in any congested condition, including varicose veins and hemorrhoids, because it enhances circulation.  Soothes irritated and infected skin conditions.  Helps reduce menopausal and PMS symptoms.  Avoid during pregnancy.

Gotu Kola (Centella asiatica) INCI Name: CENTELLA ASIATICA (GOTU KOLA) – Kettle Care extracted – Good for aging skin.  Useful for stressed skin, healing wounds, rashes, inflammations and as a skin tonic

Organic Grain Alcohol (Zea mays) INCI Name: ETHANOL & ZEA MAYS (CORN) SILK EXTRACT – Used to strengthen extractive properties of a solution and to sterilize.

Goji Berry (Lycium barbarum) INCI Name: LYCIUM BARBARUM (MATRIMONY VINE) FRUIT EXTRACT – Have been used for 6,000 years by herbalists in China, Tibet and India to protect the liver, help eyesight, improve sexual function and fertility, strengthen the legs, boost immune function, improve circulation, and promote longevity.  Goji berries are rich in antioxidants, particularly carotenoids such as beta-carotene and zeaxanthin.

Grapefruit (Citrus x paradisi) INCI Name: CITRUS PARADISI (GRAPEFRUIT) ESSENTIAL OIL – Non phototoxic.  Used for depression and as a tonic in drug withdrawal.  Good for acne, congested and oily skin, cellulite.  Tones the skin and tissues.   

Grapefruit Seed Extract (Citrus paradisi) INCI Name: CITRUS GRANDIS (GRAPEFRUIT) SEED EXTRACT – Extremely potent and effective broad spectrum bactericide, fungicide, antiviral and anti-parasitic compound.  A natural preservative and antioxidant.

Grapeseed Oil (Vitis vinifera) INCI Name: VITIS VINIFERA (GRAPE) – A potent source of proanthocyanidins, a powerful group of antioxidants.  Effective scavengers that work on harmful radicals.

Green Tea (Camellia sinensis) INCI Name: CAMELLIA SINENSIS (GREEN TEA) LEAF EXTRACT – Kettle Care extracted - Shown to combat skin cancers and to boost the immune system.  Eases bleeding from cuts.  Decreases the direct effects of sunburn, reduces metabolic changes that lead to skin cancer and aging.  Can significantly reduce wrinkles.

Hops, Organic (Humulus lupulus) INCI Name: HUMULUS LUPULUS (HOPS) – Kettle Care organically grown and extracted - A mild sedative, used for insomnia, chronic ulcers, skin eruptions and wounds.  Good for varicose ulcers.  Contain estrogenic substances, promotes feminine characteristics.  Relieves tension in muscles throughout the body.  Keeps skin soft and supple and delays wrinkling.  Do not use if depressed. Avoid during pregnancy.

Horse Chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) – Kettle Care extracted - Contains escin, used as a sunburn protective, anti-inflammatory ingredient for varicose veins.  Reduces excess fluid.

Huckleberry (Vaccinium membrandaceum) INCI Name: VACCINIUM PARVIFOLIUM (Huckleberry) – The beloved berry is high in anthocyanins and antioxidants.

Irish Moss (Chondrus crispus) – Soothing emollient used in food and cosmetics to form a gel.

Jasmine (Jasminum officinale) INCI Name: JASMINUM OFFICINALE (JASMINE) ESSENTIAL OIL – One of the divine essences, euphoric, aphrodisiac.  And great for your skin besides!  Moisturizing, healing, soothing, great for dry, sensitive skin, dermatitis and stress.

Organic Jojoba Oil (Simmondsis chinensis) INCI Name: SIMMONDSIA CHINENSIS (JOJOBA) – Acts as a sunscreen.  Leaves the skin soft, supple and smooth.  Contains protein, minerals and a waxy substance that mimics collagen.  Used for eczema, acne, hair care.  Highly penetrative. 

Juniper (Juniper communis) INCI Name: JUNIPERUS COMMUNIS (JUNIPER) – Used for acne, dermatitis, eczema, hair loss, hemorrhoids, oily complexions, as a skin toner and for wounds.  Antispasmodic.  Fortifies, the memory, calming. Avoid during pregnancy.

Kelp (Macrocystis pyriferae) – Helps regulate the texture of the skin.  High in iodine and vitamins A, B-complex, C and E.

Kukui Nut Oil (Aleurites moluccans) – Contains very high levels of the essential fatty acids linoleic and alpha-linolenic.  Kukui nut oil is soothing, readily absorbed into the skin, and is particularly effective for dry skin, psoriasis, acne, dermatitis and eczema.

Lanolin  INCI Name: LANOLIN – A product of the oil glands of sheep, extracted from the shorn wool.   A natural emulsifier, it absorbs and holds water to the skin.  Chemically similar to our skin’s own natural moisturizers.  May cause allergic reactions.

Lavender (Lavendula angustifolia) INCI Name: LAVENDER & LAVANDULA ANGUSTIFOLIA (LAVENDER) ESSENTIAL OIL – The most versatile essential oil for skin care, lavender has recently become popular for relaxation.  But its healing properties are renowned.  Reduces inflammations, relieves headaches, normalizes the sebum glands, a deodorant, an insect repellent, soothes burns, antispasmodic, disinfectant.  Good for all complexions, and in any preparation!

Lavender Hydrosol – Fully emulsified essential oil. Hydrosol is pure distillate and is neither further manufactured, enhanced, nor diluted.  Acts as an antiseptic, burn and scar treatment, insect repellant, and aromatic ingredient for perfumes, cosmetics, soaps, lotions, and household products.  It is also known for its calming properties. It is used in massage treatments, and to promote restful sleep.

Lavender Extract, Organic (Lavandula officinalis) INCI Name: LAVANDULA ANGUSTIFOLIA (LAVENDER) EXTRACT – Lavender has been used for centuries as an antiseptic, burn and scar treatment, insect repellant, and aromatic ingredient for perfumes, cosmetics, soaps, lotions, and household products.  It is also known for its calming properties. It is used in massage treatments, and to promote restful sleep.

Lecithin (Soya max) -  Derived from soybeans, lecithin is made up of many phospholipids which are emulsifying agents and one of the principal components of human cell membranes.  A superior skin restorative agent with the ability to penetrate the epidermis and carry substances to the cell level.  They can form cell-like structures called liposomes.

Lemon (Citrus limomum) INCI Name: CITRUS MEDICA LIMONUM (LEMON) EXTRACT – Antibacterial, astringent, promotes new cell generation, regulates sebum production, stimulates lymphatic system.  Use for chapped and itching skin, freckles, dandruff.  A tissue toner, good for cellulite.  Energizing; clears mind, relieves depression, refreshing, strengthening.  Do not use on skin exposed to direct sunlight.

Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) – Has a calming effect for depression and tension.  Cooling, good for insect bites, chest complaints.  Extracts are antiviral and help clean and heal wounds by starving bacteria of oxygen.

Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) – Antibacterial, antifungal, astringent used as a deodorant and insect repellent.  Use for fungal infections and to refine large pores.  A tissue toner helpful with acne.

Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) INCI Name: GLYCYRRHIZA GLABRA (LICORICE) – Soothing and emollient, opens pores so other herbs can medicate and clean them out.  Used as a skin lightener in treatment of dark spots.  A sweet emollient. 

Lime (Citrus aurantifolia) INCI Name: CITRUS AURANTIFOLIA (LIME) ESSENTIAL OIL – Used as an astringent, tonic and for anxiety and depression.  Pronounced, fresh essence.  Expressed peel oil is phototoxic, but whole fruit oil is not.

Lupine (Lupinus perennis & other species) – Applied to scabby blemishes and added to facial steams and masks to reduce oiliness and invigorate full skin.

Organic Marsh Mallow (Malva sylvestris) INCI Name: MALVA SYLVESTRIS (COMMON MALLOW) EXTRACT – A soothing agent that counters irritation and mild inflammation. Useful for mild cases of eczema. 

Mandarin (Citrus reticulate) INCI Name: CITRUS RETICULATA (MANDARIN) ESSENTIAL OIL – The fruit was a traditional gift to the Mandarins of China.  Recommended for Acne, congested and oily skin, scars, spots, stretch marks and as a toner. 

Mango Butter (Mangifera indica) INCI Name: MANGIFERA INDICA (MANGO) SEED  – Extracted from the fruit kernels of the Mango tree.  Melts readily on contact with the skin and disperses evenly.  May be used for dryness to assist moisturization after exposure to the sun and other harsh elements.

Marjoram – (Origanum majorana) – Very helpful for muscular and rheumatic pain, sprains, strains, stiff joints.  The essence is initially sweet, with a camphorous afternote.  I love this one!  Also good for menstrual problems, colds and bronchitis.

Meadowsweet (Spirea Ulmaria) INCI Name: SPIRAEA ULMARIA (MEADOWSWEET) FLOWER EXTRACT – Fragrant meadowsweet has the scent of almonds, making it excellent for strewing and bouquets through buildings.  Anti-inflammatory chemicals called salicylages were first extracted from it in the 1830s.  Reduces inflammations and fevers and topically for painful arthritic and rheumatic joints.  Used as an astringent and acne buster.

Mineral Salts – Used in our deodorant.  The primary mineral is potassium alum, used in ancient China and Egypt for the odor reducing effects  Recommended by doctors for patients with dermatitis and post operative cancer patients receiving radiation treatment.  A totally natural product, it contains no aluminum compounds.  It works by killing the bacteria that accumulate when you perspire.  It also stops bleeding and promotes healing of shaving cuts.

MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) – A naturally occurring organic compound found in every drop of rain and non-processed food.  Gently counteracts many irritants that harm and attack the health of skin and mucous membranes.  Relieves irritation and discomfort caused by exposure to sun and wind, dryness, abrasion and toxic chemicals.

Myrrh (Commiphora myrrha) INCI Name: COMMIPHORA MYRRHA (MYRRH) ESSENTIAL OIL – Has been used medicinally for 3700 years.  Anti-inflammatory, astringent and antimicrobial, it is often used for chapped and cracked skin, eczema, mature complexions, wounds and wrinkles. Avoid during pregnancy.

Neem (Azadirachta indica) INCI Name: AZADIRACHTA INDICA (NEEM) OIL  – Used for centuries in traditional Indian medicine to aid in the healing of topical skin disorders such as eczema, psoriasis, rashes, burns and acne.  It is a very effective antiseptic, antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral agent.

Neroli (Citrus bigaradia, aurantium) INCI Name: CITRUS AURANTIUM (BLOOD ORANGE) ESSENTIAL OIL – Extracted from flowers of sweet and bitter orange.  Used in aromatherapy for soothing the nerves and helping induce sleep.

Oats (Avena sativa) INCI Name: AVENA SATIVA (OAT) – Organically grown.  Used to soothe the skin in the bath for dermatitis.  A gentle exfoliant used in scrubs and masks.  It has a slight bleaching effect and is said to help fade or remove age spots and other skin discolorations. Eating oats is recommended as a tonic for the nervous system, for exhaustion, depression and weakness. 

Olive Oil (Olea europaea) INCI Name: OLEA EUROPAEA (OLIVE) OIL – Obtained from ripe olives grown around the Mediterranean Sea, it is superior to mineral oils in penetrating power.  Contains protein, minerals, vitamins and is used for rheumatic conditions and for soothing.  Rich in polyphenols, an antioxidant that blocks inflammation, and oleic acid to penetrate cell membranes. 

May cause acne, so use only on dry and normal skin.

Orange, Sweet (Citrus sinensis) INCI Name: CITRUS SINENSIS (SWEET ORANGE) ESSENTIAL OIL & CITRUS AURANTIUM (BLOOD ORANGE) ESSENTIAL OIL – Orange oil is antibacterial, astringent and used in skin toning, treatment of acne and cellulitis.  Avoid exposure to sun after treatment with orange oil.  Sweet, light and fresh essence.

Oregano (Origanum vulgare) – Very ancient medical reputation.  Used for inflammations of the mouth and throat; bactericidal, fungicidal, kills parasites.

Palm Oil (Elaesis guineensis) INCI Name: ELAEIS GUINEENSIS (AFRICAN OIL PALM) OIL – The oil is used in baby soaps, ordinary soaps, liniments and ointments.  Obtained from the fruit or seed of the palm tree.  It forms rich, stable lathers and creates a hard, long-lasting bar.

Palma Rosa (Cymbopogon martini) INCI Name: CYMBOPOGON MARTINI (PALMAROSA) EXTRACT – Used in perfumery and cosmetics, is helpful for infections and as a tonic.  Antiseptic, antibacterial. , moisturizing and hydrating, it is valuable for acne, dermatitis and minor skin infections, scars, sores and wrinkles.  Stimulates cellular regeneration, regulates sebum production.

Palmitate – Acts as an antioxidant that it protects the skin from environmental pollution, and also damage from free radicals. It also facilitates cellular renewal and thus reduces fine lines and wrinkles. 

Panthenol (Vitamin B Complex Factor) INCI Name: PANTHENOL – Widely used in hair products and emollients and as a supplement in foods.  Employed medically to aid digestion.  It is good for human tissues.  No known toxicity.

Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin) – Traditionally used as an insect repellent for linens, it has many uses in skin care as well.  Anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal and supports generation of new cells.  Use for acne, aging and chapped skin, and dandruff.

Peppermint (Mentha piperita) INCI Name: MENTHA PIPERITA (PEPPERMINT) – An excellent antiseptic and astringent.  It soothes and tones blemished, irritated skin.  Used for treatment of oily skin, acne, blackheads and pimples.  Relieves muscle and joint pains.  Vitalizing and uplifting.  Helps open up breathing passages and sinuses.

Peru Balsam (Myroxylon balsamum pereirae) INCI Name: MYROXYLON PEREIRAE (PERU BALSAM) ESSENTIAL OIL – With its sweet, rich vanilla-like scent, it is a welcome addition to cremes for dry and chapped skin, eczema, rashes, sores and wounds.  Also helps rheumatism.

Pine (pinus sylvestris) – often prescribed in treating psoriasis, itching, pimples, eczema, skin diseases, and poor skin. It gives you balanced, smooth, renewed and shiny skin. Pine essential oil also has a mesmerizing essence and hence gives a sweet aroma to the cosmetics it is used in. It is also used in making perfumes and scents. It is also used in removing lice from hair. Pine essential oil is widely used as massage oil and bath oil. 

Pomegranate Oil (Punica granatum) INCI Name: PUNICA GRANATUM – Nourishes and revitalizes your skin and your body, stalls the effects of aging while strengthening and supporting your immune system,  soothes minor skin irritations as it smoothes away wrinkles.   Helps the body naturally restore moisture and health for those “intimate” needs, helps relieve the effects of menopause, and it’s uncomfortable symptoms.  Is rich in antioxidants, flavonoids and punicic acid.  Nourishing for the outer epidermal layer.

Potassium solution – Used as an emulsifier and alkali in liquid soaps; bonds oil and water together in the manufacture of bar soaps.

Potassium Sorbate INCI Name: POTASSIUM SORBATE – Sorbic Acid Potassium Salt.  Used as a mold and yeast inhibitor in food and body care products. This gentle preservative is considered to be safe and mild because of its long term safety record and non-toxic profile. Potassium sorbate is non-irritating and non-sensitizing.

Purified Water INCI Name: WATER – Distilled to remove any minerals that could bind the medicinal properties of the herbs and to sterilize.

Red Clover (Trifolium praetense) INCI Name: TRIFOLIUM PRATENSE (RED CLOVER) – Kettle Care organically grown and extracted - Highly nourishing, calming reliever of menopausal distresses.  Used as a cleansing herb for skin complaints.  Prescribed to breast, ovarian and lymphatic cancer sufferers.

Rice Flour (Oryza sativa) INCI Name: ORYZA SATIVA (BROWN RICE) – Used as a poultice for burns, scalds, rice is soothing and acts as a binder with other herbs.

Rose Hip Seed (Rosa various) INCI Name: ROSE HIPS SEED OIL – Rich in vitamin C and used as a flavoring, this oil has been shown to have remarkable scar reduction properties.  High in linoleic and linolenic acids.

Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) INCI Name: ROSEMARY & ROSMARINUS OFFICINALIS (ROSEMARY) LEAF EXTRACT – Prevents hair loss and strengthens hair.  Improves circulation, and is invigorating, good for varicose veins.   Astringent, antiseptic and cleansing, it is used for burns, rheumatism, muscle pain and eczema.  An insect repellent. Royal Jelly INCI Name: ROYAL JELLY – A thick fluid produced by nurse bees and fed to the queen, royal jelly is high in protein, hormones, lipids, vitamins, gelatin and nucleic acids (such as RNA and DNA) that assist in topical cell regeneration.  It contains Vitamins A, B Complex, biotin, folic acid and inositol, as well as minerals such as calcium, chromium, magnesium, phosphorus, iron, potassium, silicon, sulfur, zinc and 18 amino acids, collagen.   The gamma globulin content fights infection and stimulates the immune system.

Safflower Oil (Carthamus tinctorius) INCI Name: CARTHAMNUS TINCTORIUS (SAFFLOWER) OIL – Used in creams, lotions and soaps to soften the skin and in hair conditioners.  Has one of the highest linoleic acid contents of all known oils, giving it superior skin compatibility and deep moisturizing capability since the moisture content of the skin is proportional to the content of essential unsaturated fatty acids. 

Sage, Dalmatian (Salvia officinalis) – Contains estrogen-like substances.  Useful for wrinkles, astringent and can heal eczema.  Mildly antibacterial.  Used in invigorating bath preparations and to soothe rheumatic complaints. Avoid during pregnancy.

Sandalwood (Santalum album) INCI Name: SANTALUM ALBUM (SANDALWOOD) – An external disinfectant and antiseptic for sores and wounds.  Rejuvenating scent, used in acne preparations.

Savory, Summer (Satureja hortensis) – Applied externally, brings instant relief from insect bites, bee and wasp stings.  Fungicidal, bactericidal.

Sea Salt (sodium alginate) INCI Name: SEA SALT – Used for exfoliating and detoxifying.

Seaweed Extract INCI Name: SEAWEED – Extracted from brown seaweed, nearly odorless and tasteless.  No known toxicity.

Shea or Karite Butter (Butyrospermum parkii) INCI Name: BUTYROSPERMUM PARKII (SHEA BUTTER) – Provides protection from the sun.  Imparts superior softness to the skin, with antimicrobial and moisturizing properties.  Also contains vitamins and allantoin, naturally healing for wrinkles and capillary circulation.  Has a nourishing effect and seems to induce a state of self-protection in the cells through its stimulating action on the metabolism.  Protects against the ultraviolet rays that cause sunburn. 

Shiitake Mushroom (Lentinus edodes) INCI Name: LENTINUS EDODES (SHIITAKE MUSHROOM) EXTRACT – contain kojic acid.  Kojic acid, which prevents the formation of melanin, or pigment, in skin, resulting in a brighter, more even complexion.

Slippery Elm (Ulmus fulva) – Soothing, strengthening and healing for all parts it comes in contact with, used in ointments, poultices and lozenges, for wounds, sores, inflamed surfaces, ulcers, burns and skin diseases.

Sodium Hydroxide INCI Name: SODIUM HYDROXIDE – An alkali and emulsifier in soaps.  White or nearly white pellets, fakes or sticks. 

Spearmint (Mentha spicata) INCI Name: MENTHA SPICATA (SPEARMINT) – better adapted to children and those with sensitive skin than peppermint, it is milder and less powerful.  Excellent for acne, dermatitis, congested skin.  Helps with fatigue, headache, migraine, nervous strain. 

Spirulina (Spirula) INCI Name: SPIRULINA – Easily assimilated by the body.  Provides GLA, essential fatty acids, vitamin B 12, iron, protein, RNA & DNA, chlorophyll.  Supplies nutrients needed to cleanse and heal.

Organic Sunflower (Helianthus annuus) INCI Name: HELIANTHUS ANNUUS (SUNFLOWER) OIL – Good for relief of conditions of the lungs.  Pale yellow in color, it contains vitamins and minerals, and is good for all skin types.

Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia)  INCI Name: MELALEUCA ALTERNIFOLIA (TEA TREE) ESSENTIAL OIL – Well known for antibacterial and antifungal properties and used for acne, abscesses, athlete’s foot, herpes, inflamed nail beds, pimples, oily skin irritation and rashes.  Alleviates cough/cold symptoms, relieves muscle aches and pains.  An insect repellent. 

Tocopherol (Vitamin E) INCI Name: TOCOPHEROL – Essential for maintaining the activities of enzymes and formation of red blood cells.  Inhibits formation of cancer causing compounds.  Prevents formation of free radicals, a useful weapon against premature aging and combat of wrinkles.  Promotes healing of burned skin.  A deep moisturizer that softens and tones dry lines.  Our Vitamin E T-50 Mixed Tocopherol is of a natural source derived from the distillate of a variety of vegetable oils, primary soybean and corn.  According to our supplier the Vitamin E oil is distilled, refined and purified to a much greater extent than the oil from which they are derived.  These additional steps are sufficient to remove any protein, if present.  The Vitamin E is derived from no-GMO materials.  It is also FCC (food grade) and certified Kosher grade.

Tragacanth Gum (Astragalus gummifer) INCI Name: ASTRAGALUS GUMMIFER GUM – The gummy exudate of a plant from Iran and Asia Minor.  Used in making emulsions for the suspension of powders to impart consistence.

Thyme, Red (Thymus vulgaris) INCI Name: THYME – A powerful antiseptic, it enhances the immune system.  Stimulates the circulation, throws off chills and acts as an exhilarating tonic to the whole system.  Excellent for physical and mental exhaustion, relieving tension, anxiety and insomnia and lifts the spirits.  Regulates the menstrual cycle, and acts as an anesthetic to deaden pain in muscle and rheumatic complaints.

Uva Ursi Leaf (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi) INCI Name: ARCTOSTAPHYLOS UVA-URSI – Used for its antiseptic and antibiotic properties. It can be used on the skin as a wash to help heal cuts and scrapes. It may also be used to help treat rashes, canker sores and arthritis pain. It is often included as an active ingredient in over-the-counter skin brightening cosmetic preparations. Uva ursi also has other properties that may help reduce the appearance of discoloration and scars. May cause allergic reactions

Vanilla Extract (Vanilla planifolia) INCI Name: VANILLA PLANIFOLIA (VANILLA) FRUIT EXTRACT  – A dark brown liquid with a rich, sweet, balsamic, vanilla odor.  Non toxic, but a common sensitizing agent.  Commonly used as a food flavoring.

Vegetable Glycerin INCI Name: VEGETABLE GLYCERIN – Naturally extracted from vegetable oils, glycerin has been used in cosmetic formulations for thousands of years for its emollient and humectant properties.  The synthetic version is highly irritating. 

Vegetable Quaternary – Derived from cellulose, it gives hair sheen. 

Vitamin A (Retinol) INCI Name: RETINYL PALMITATE (VITAMIN A PALMITATE) – Helps produce new and healthy cells in skin.  Prevents and treats acne.  Helps control psoriasis and aged skin, and preventing malignant skin cancer.  Suppresses warts.

Vitamin B-5 (Pantothenic acid) – Helpful to fight wrinkles as well as graying of the hair.  Plays an important role in the secretion of hormones.

White Willow (Salix alba) – Astringent, contains salicin, making it effective for eczema and  pimples.

Wild Yam (Discorea villosa) INCI Name: DIOSCOREA VILLOSA (WILD YAM) – Kettle Care extracted - Useful for promoting the production of progesterone.  Strengthens the liver, soothes the nerves.  Traditionally used for any kind of muscular spasm, ovarian and uterine pain.  Soothes painful conditions of the urinary tract.

Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens) – A mild analgesic, anti-inflammatory good for rheumatism because of its warming action on muscles and skin.  Excellent in body rubs and bath oils.  Intensely strong, sweet and woody.  Should not be used for aromatherapy.

Witch Hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) INCI Name: HAMAMELIS VIRGINIANA (WITCH HAZEL) – Kettle Care extracted - Relieves the pain and swelling of varicose veins, the itching of hemorrhoids and speeds healing of various ulcers.  Relieves burns, swollen or inflamed skin conditions, engorged breasts, sprains and strains.  Soothes mosquito bites and stings, tightens tissues and reduces broken capillaries. 

Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) – Used to expel worms and as an insect repellent.  Do not use internally.

Xanthan Gum INCI Name: XANTHAN GUM – A gum produced by a culture with Xanthomonas campestris on corn sugar.  Widely used as a thickener, an emulsifier, and stabilizer.  No known toxicity.

Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) – Fresh leaves arrest bleeding and are applied as a poultice to wounds and shaving cuts.  Flowers treat eczema.

Ylang-Ylang (Cananga odorata genuina) INCI Name: CANANGA ODORATA (YLANG YLANG) – An intriguing perfume oil that blends well with others, and medicinal as well.  Good for acne, hair growth and rinse, irritated and oily skin, general skin care. Its action on the nervous system is impressive.  Treats depression, frigidity, impotence, insomnia, anger, nervous tension and stress related disorders.  A must to own!

Zinc Oxide INCI Name: ZINC OXIDE – used as an astringent, antiseptic and protective in skin diseases.  A sunscreen.  Size: .2 microns
